Visualization of music: posters

Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto – Berlin and David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto – World Citizen.
Two posters made two visualize the musical works of Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto – Berlin and David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto – World Citizen.

Berlin:
I wanted to try to mimic the musical composition. First adding analogue elements then manipulate and add further expression digital. I would start out, drawing figuratively associations with the music. Then did some scans of them. While I scanned the drawings I physicly shook the scanner. Leaving the elements digtalized a way that the first creator had no control over. Splitting the process of expression into two. This increased the feeling of noise and sound in the image itself, abstracting the elements I started out with. I then did the final composition by computer, adding some details. Like sampling parts of the picture and let them appeared outside the frame creating a new context for them, again based on my take on the musical composition process.
World Citizen:
My starting point for this was to create a few simple rules. Not be too lead by the narrative lyrics. They simply had too much obvious imagery. My first idea was a image representation of pong. Where the sound bounced back and forth, and where David Sylvians call for help never reaches anyone outside these borders. Leaving it dead, I looked further away from the figurative but was stuck. Browsing my computer for images I remembered the song title "World Citizen". I started to look through my vacation photos, from traveling abroad. After looking through various photos of visuals from my travel to Tokyo. I found a funny architectual building form the Shinjuku district. The windows of one building had so many lines it seemed to bounce back and forth. This was a nice continuation of my initial thought and I started cutting out pieces of photos to use in a new composition. I wanted the lines to bounce back and forth within an shape of a human head. A man whos head is hung and who grieves over this world. Much like the my interpretation of the theme. Put him in a black background. Leaving him to the vastness of the unknown future.
